Denison city council approved a new housing development at Monday night’s meeting.
“A local developer picked up the property recently and approached the city about wanting to develop it for a single-family residential neighborhood,” said Bill Medina, Denison Senior Planner.
North of Morton Street between Ray Drive and Juanita Drive, what used to be an old farm will become a 66 acre housing development.
The proposed development is called Travis Heights. The 160-acre lot would consist of 400 single family homes. The city is calling it the largest residential expansion Sherman has seen.
“The growth in Sherman doesn’t seem to be slowing anytime soon,” city spokesperson Nate Strauch said. “Moving from building 300, 400, 500 homes a year to moving that into thousands of homes a year.”
We’re celebrating Barbara J. Vilbig, PE, David A. Vilbig, PE, Jennifer Vilbig Lawson, PE and Tommy Vilbig, PE as licensed professional engineers! Today, August 4th, 2021 is the 6th annual Professional Engineers Day. We’re also celebrating Matthew Fusselman, EIT as a licensed engineer in training!
About Professional Engineers Day
“On August 8, 1907, the first professional engineering license was issued to Charles Bellamy in Wyoming. Since that time, licensure has expanded and professional engineers across the U.S. have made the commitment to protect the public health, safety, and welfare. NSPE is celebrating licensed professional engineers with the sixth annual Professional Engineers Day on Wednesday, August 4, 2021. Join us as we raise awareness about what it means to be a PE, recognize licensed PEs, and show appreciation for the work they do each and every day.”
We are excited to work on this project for QuikTrip in Denison.
“QuikTrip may soon be coming to north Denison with its third Texoma location. The convenience store and gas station chain quietly submitted requests for exceptions with the city of Denison for a new location along State Highway 120.”
Last week, Jennifer Vilbig Lawson, PE and Tommy Vilbig, PE, attended the TSPE Conference & 85th Annual Meeting at the Star in Frisco, Texas. The conference was a great opportunity for networking with other professional engineers while earning professional development hours.
Vilbig & Associates, PLLC sponsored the conference and is proud to support our profession.
As a bonus, dinner one night was held at the Dallas Cowboys Training Table and included a tour of the Star aka the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters. Pictures from the tour are below.

To celebrate Professional Engineers Day, today, August 5, 2020 we’re sharing why we became professional engineers.
Tell us why you decided to become a Professional Engineer
David A. Vilbig, PE, RPLS – As a kid I was always interested in how things worked. I often broke toys to see how they worked. I knew my Dad, an electrical engineer, would be able to fix anything. I chose Civil Engineering because of my experience working for my grandfather’s excavation and dirt moving company.
Barbara J. Vilbig, PE – With an affinity towards math, I was more interested in hands on or practical applications. My father, an electrical engineer in the electrical contracting business influenced my decision. I never had a teacher or counselor guide me in the direction of engineering. I chose Civil Engineering because of my love for water. Growing up in the panhandle of Texas, rain and water were fascinating and scarce commodities.
Jennifer M. Vilbig, PE – I always loved solving problems. With parents (and grandparents) that are engineers, even though it was challenging in school, I knew that I could do it because they had done it, too. I picked civil engineering because I wanted to have a visible impact on public infrastructure.
Thomas L. Vilbig, PE – I always enjoyed building and creating things even from a young age. Legos were my favorite toy as a child and I loved construction equipment. I still get excited to see the projects I helped design go into construction and get completed.

“In 1934, a group of professional engineers met in New York City to establish an organization dedicated to the non-technical concerns of licensed professional engineers. The National Society of Professional Engineers stands today as the only national organization committed to addressing the professional concerns of licensed PEs across all disciplines.”
“A century ago, anyone could work as an engineer without proof of competency. In order to protect the public health, safety, and welfare, the first engineering licensure law was enacted in 1907 in Wyoming”
