VA hosts the Northeast Texas Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers Holiday Party & Annual Dessert Competition

On Thursday, December 9th 2021, Vilbig & Associates hosted the Northeast Texas Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, TSPE, annual holiday party and dessert competition.

We enjoyed a fajita buffet catered by Denison’s own Rustico’s, an ethics discussion and the always popular dessert competition. The competition field was smaller than in years past with only six entrants, but the competition was TOUGH. The first round of votes resulted in a four way tie for first place! Eliminating the runners up, the second round of voting yielded a winner, Tom Pruitt, PE with his almond joy cake!

The ethics discussion was very thought provoking and provided all engineers in attendance the required 1 hour of ethics continuing education credit. We discussed several recent cases from the National Society of Professional Engineers Board of Ethical Review.

Congratulations to Tom Pruitt, PE with the City of Sherman for winning the dessert competition!
The ethics discussion included a bit of Dilbert humor.

Today, November 11, 2021, we hosted the Denison Youth Leadership Academy at our office!

We began with a tour of, spoke about our work, showed a set of civil engineering plans from a project in Denison and described the education requirements to be an engineer. Finally, we challenged the students to design and construct a tower in 45 minutes.

Each group received $5.00, a tablet of paper for their design schematic and a list of supplies with prices. With 15 minutes left, a surprise challenge was announced! The tower had to withstand a hurricane (fan)!

Discussions during the schematic design phase.
The completed towers!

Thank you, Josh Massey, for asking us to participate in the construction day for the academy. We had fun hosting the students!

Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi! I am Jennifer Vilbig Lawson. I am a 2nd generation civil engineer and native of Dallas. I am recently married and have a wild 2-year-old jack russel terrier. She keeps life interesting!

Tell us a little about your business.
Vilbig & Associates is civil engineering and surveying consulting firm that was founded by my parents in Dallas in 1983. We have been doing work in Grayson County for over 20 years, and we moved our office to Denison in 2017. We help small business owners, property owners, developers and municipalities with construction plans for water lines, sewer lines, parking lots, street, and landscape plans. We’re small but look forward to continuing to our growth. My parents are not retiring anytime soon, but when they do my brother, Tommy, who is also a civil engineer, and I will be ready to continue the tradition of the Vilbig family in Texas business since 1886.

Why We Became Professional Engineers

To celebrate Professional Engineers Day, today, August 5, 2020 we’re sharing why we became professional engineers.

Tell us why you decided to become a Professional Engineer

David A. Vilbig, PE, RPLS – As a kid I was always interested in how things worked.  I often broke toys to see how they worked.  I knew my Dad, an electrical engineer, would be able to fix anything.  I chose Civil Engineering because of my experience working for my grandfather’s excavation and dirt moving company.

Barbara J. Vilbig, PE – With an affinity towards math, I was more interested in hands on or practical applications.  My father, an electrical engineer in the electrical contracting business influenced my decision.  I never had a teacher or counselor guide me in the direction of engineering.  I chose Civil Engineering because of my love for water.  Growing up in the panhandle of Texas, rain and water were fascinating and scarce commodities.

Jennifer M. Vilbig, PE – I always loved solving problems. With parents (and grandparents) that are engineers, even though it was challenging in school, I knew that I could do it because they had done it, too. I picked civil engineering because I wanted to have a visible impact on public infrastructure.

Thomas L. Vilbig, PE – I always enjoyed building and creating things even from a young age.  Legos were my favorite toy as a child and I loved construction equipment.  I still get excited to see the projects I helped design go into construction and get completed.

About the National Society of Professional Engineers

“In 1934, a group of professional engineers met in New York City to establish an organization dedicated to the non-technical concerns of licensed professional engineers. The National Society of Professional Engineers stands today as the only national organization committed to addressing the professional concerns of licensed PEs across all disciplines.”

“A century ago, anyone could work as an engineer without proof of competency. In order to protect the public health, safety, and welfare, the first engineering licensure law was enacted in 1907 in Wyoming”
